What is Yahoo! JAPAN Search?

Yahoo! JAPAN is one of the most visited portals in Japan. It began in 1996 as a joint venture, has long been run separately from Yahoo in the United States, and is now operated by LY Corporation, the company formed in October 2023 by the merger of Z Holdings, LINE and Yahoo Japan.

Yahoo! JAPAN Search has used Google's search technology since 2010, so organic rankings often look like Google's. The page around them is different: search ads come from LY Corporation's own ad platform, and news, shopping, auctions and Q&A modules link to Yahoo! JAPAN services.

What changes when you open Yahoo! JAPAN Search from a Japanese IP?

• Search ads. Ads sold through LY Corporation's ad platform, which is separate from Google Ads. A campaign can run on one and not the other.
• Portal modules. Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Shopping and Chiebukuro answers shown next to the results.
• Ranking details. Rankings are often close to Google's, but the order and the features shown can differ.
• Language. The whole page is in Japanese, built for users in Japan.

What does a Japanese IP not change on Yahoo! JAPAN Search?

• Service availability. Yahoo! JAPAN stopped offering most of its services to users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom on 6 April 2022. A Japanese IP does not change who Yahoo! JAPAN chooses to serve: if you are in the EEA or the UK, respect that choice.
• The exact area. City targeting (-city-tokyo) gets an IP in that city when one is online, and city availability varies; the site may still infer a nearby area from other signals.
• A signed-in profile. Stay signed out so that your own history does not change the results.

Yahoo! JAPAN's terms of use apply to every visit; read them before you automate anything. We could not read its robots.txt from Europe on 13 October 2026, because Yahoo! JAPAN does not serve most of the EEA, so check it from your own location.

For product data, the Yahoo! JAPAN Developer Network offers official shopping APIs with an application ID. For your own search ads, the reports inside LY Corporation's ad platform are the reliable source. Use a Japanese residential IP to see the live page as a searcher does, one query at a time.
